Sailfin Mollies, or Poecilia latipinna or velifera, are some of the most beautiful and highly prized livebearers in the aquarium trade. Known and named for the enormous, impressive dorsal fin displayed by males, this is a popular and well-liked species. Black, green dalmatian, golden, harlequin/calico, chocolate, albino, and creamsicle are just a few of the countless color variations that have resulted from decades of selective breeding. This fish can be found in freshwater, brackish water, and saltwater in the southern part of North America, but it is almost always raised in alkaline freshwater in fish tanks. In its adult form, this fish can grow to a maximum size of 4 to 5 inches, making it a substantial member of the fish community. Its large size belies a calm but sociable nature, making it a great addition to aquariums housing a wide variety of fish species.
The Sailfin Molly will get along with most other peaceful fish in an aquarium of a reasonable size. This omnivore should not be kept with other invertebrates due to its potential to harm dwarf shrimp and their offspring. This fish isn't picky about its diet, so high-quality dry food is fine, but it also needs a wide variety of frozen foods to thrive. It likes to hang out in the aquarium's middle and upper levels, though it can and will jump out of the water if it has to. Use a cover that fits snugly over the tank to keep this fish from jumping out.
The Sailfin Molly is not dependent on plant life, but it will appreciate it if you provide it with some. Most hardy stem plants, rooted plants, Marimo Moss Balls, and mosses should be fine in this aquarium provided the Sailfin Molly is adequately fed. If you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, the Sailfin Molly is a must-catch fish.
