Guppy Article

This article presents the genus Poecilia as it relates to guppies and numerous varieties belonging to this species affectionately known as the Guppy and the millions fish. Essentially Poecilia reticulata is species which represents the bulk of these fish; however, there is another species of guppy which needed to be included called Poecilia wingei or what is referred to as Endler's guppy. Whether P.wingei is formally a guppy or not may be disputed that said they are being sold and marketed as Endler's guppy.

These two species of the genus Poecilia as they relate to guppies are classified in the Poecilidae family of freshwater fishes of "live bearers" or live-bearing aquarium fish such as the molly, platy and swordtail.

The natural range for guppies spans northeast South America but P. reticulate were introduced to many habitats all over the world. These freshwater fish are now native to Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Brazil, Guyana, Jamaica, the Netherlands Antilles, Trinidad and Tobago, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the United States and Venezuela.

Poecilia reticulata are one of the most popular freshwater aquarium fish species in the world for a number of reasons including their beautiful colors, small size, and minimal tank requirements, and low cost acquiring them although now you spend considerably on some gorgeous varieties of exotic guppies for sale online.

Guppy Description

In particular P. reticulata is by far the most easily identifiable and popular tropical fish species available today. Typically they reach less than three inches in length and have a lifespan of two years. While there are only two species on record presently P. reticulata and P. wingei, there are hundreds of color strains due to selective or inline breeding efforts.

Additionally there multiple varieties of fin variations as well such as Bottom Swordtail, Cofer Tail or Spade Tail, Delta Tail or Triangle Tail, Double Sword Tail, Fantail, Lyretail, Pintail or Needle Tail, Roundtail, Scarf Tail or Flag Tail, SpearTail, Top Swordtail, and Veiltail respectively. But there are a number of guppies with different markings which are important to note. Here are the types of guppies found today but are not exhaustive.

This is by no means a complete list but readily offered: Grass guppies, Half-black or Tuxedo guppies, Lace guppies, Leopard guppies, Mosaic guppies, Moscow guppies and Snakeskin guppies. The key to understanding guppy types or guppy color strains is that vary by geography or region and selective breeding efforts are never ending. We see outcomes of inline breeding with other freshwater tropical such as discus, Betta, and angelfish to name a few.

Guppy Characteristics

So what is so unique about Guppies anyway? These are just cute little colored fish that live in a mini fish tank, right? For the most part guppy fish at their largest size are less than three inches in length but sizes vary. Males are generally smaller than females who can range from 1.2 to 2.4 inches long. Male guppies range in size from .6 to 1.4 inches long.

What make guppy fish so amazing are their gorgeous colors, finnage and chasing and dancing during mating. Poecilia reticulate are classified in the Poecilidae family of freshwater fishes of "live bearers" or live-bearing aquarium fish. Guppies have an interesting mating system referred to as polyandry which basically means the females mate with multiple males. The reasoning behind this that male's reproductive success is directly related to how many times they mate.

Guppy History

The millions fish or Guppy fish have Benn in the aquarium hobby for over 155 years when they were first described by Wilhelm Peters in Venezuela in 1859. Peters was a German naturalist and explorer whose comprehensive work covered dealing with mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, river fish, insects and botany. In 1861 Dr. Filippo de Filippi described Lebistes poecilioides in Barbados.

It was later named Girardinus guppyi by Albert Gunther to honor of Robert John Lechmere Guppy, who sent specimens of the species from Trinidad to the Natural History Museum in London. In 1913 Regan would reclassify it as Lebistes reticulatus and in 1963 Rosen and Bailey restored it back to its original nam, Poecilia reticulate.

Guppy Diet

Ok feeding guppies are fairly simple because there are many prepared aquarium foods on the market including live and frozen foods. Basically guppies are omnivorous in the wild. Wild guppies are known to feed on algae, diatoms, invertebrates, plant fragments, mineral particles, aquatic insect larvae, and other sources but this can vary on naturally occurring food relative to availability in their habitat. Laboratory experiments confirmed that guppies show what's called a diet switching behavior which means diet preference is related to factors such as the presence of competitors and they are recorded as feeding disproportionately on more abundant food whey offered two food choices.

At any rate guppies will eat a host of things! These things can contain algae, beef heart, brine shrimp, insect larvae, and tubixfex worms and microworms. Don't worry you can easily buy them guppy flake food and as an alternative to the above mentioned live foods you can offer them freeze dried alternatives. Offering live bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia and mosquito larvae are welcomed. Hatching brine shrimp at home seems to be the cost effective way to go.

Guppy Colors

Overall Poecilia reticulata are amazingly beautiful small freshwater fishes. That said P. reticulata are affectionately known as guppies and because of their gorgeous colors and finnage not to mention the numerous varieties available as a result of selective breeding efforts. This is in stark contrast to wild fish which may only show strong colors based on reactions to being agitated by other fish. Some of the colors offered in the hobby include albino, blond, blue, cream, gold, lutino, pink, silver, white and wild grey.

Guppy Finnage and color variations

One of the direct benefits of selective breeding is the fantastic creations of colors, different finnage and color variations found in guppy fish.
