Poecilia melanogaster (Limia) a beautiful livebear
Poecilia (Limia) melanogaster
Rarely do hobbyists successfully maintain a wild livebearer population for decades. When one considers the vast variety of brightly colored sports available for guppy, platy, molly, and co., it's easy to see why. If a wild form can hold its own against them, it's probably a pretty fish. One such species is the melanistic fruit fly Poecilia melanogaster. Its natural habitat is Jamaica, but only captive-bred examples are occasionally made available. However, P. melanogaster is so rare that even when it does show up in pet stores, it quickly sells out.
